Bioiberica’s anti-aging hyaluronic acid matrix affirmed by peer-reviewed study

30 Mar 2023 --- Made with essential components of human skin, research shows Dermial has regenerative, antioxidant and moisturizing properties that treat and prevent skin aging. Bioberica’s hyaluronic acid ingredient was found to have potential in developing products for the growing nutricosmetics space in supplements, functional food and cosmetics.

“The conclusions of this latest peer-reviewed paper mark an exciting development in the research exploring Dermial – further verifying the science-based benefits of the ingredient and its potential in nutricosmetics,” says Daniel Martínez Puig, head of human health R&D at Bioiberica.

The study extracted, characterized and evaluated the benefits of Dermial at an in-vitro level for skin and beauty innovation.

The researchers found several potential skin benefits, such as stimulating cell migration and proliferation, inducing collagen synthesis, elastin and Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), and protecting against reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and ROS-induced DNA damage.

The in-vitro evaluation of the ingredient’s biological activity proved that Dermial induced cell proliferation and migration. It also increased the synthesis of collagen type I and III, elastin and GAGs. 

The study, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, also found evidence for the ingredient’s antioxidant properties in skin cells. 

“We can’t wait to unlock exciting opportunities for brands already in or considering entering this market. Following these promising outcomes, our next step will be to carry out a clinical trial to confirm the efficacy of Dermial in humans,” notes Martínez.

Moreover, the results indicate that the hyaluronic acid matrix ingredient is easily absorbed in the intestines, suggesting that it could be used in oral and topical skin care applications. The researchers note that further studies are needed to corroborate its oral absorption. 

Glycosaminoglycans and hyaluronic acid 
The hyaluronic acid matrix was isolated and purified from a rooster comb and characterized physicochemically and molecularly in the study. 

Dermial contained GAGs, with an exceptionally high concentration of hyaluronic acid (67%). These are essential components in the skin’s extracellular matrix and have been proven to maintain skin hydration and regulate cell migration, proliferation and differentiation. Hyaluronic acid is one of the most widely used biomolecules to treat skin aging. 

The product also contains sulfated GAGs (12%), such as dermatan sulfate, protein (17%), collagen (10.4%) and water. 

The study’s results indicate that Dermial is easily absorbed in the intestines, suggesting it could be used in supplements for skin care.As skin ages, GAGs and dermis collagen and elastin concentration and quality decrease, which leads to loss of skin moisture and dermal thickness that cause wrinkles, sagging and aging. 

Oxidative stress also contributes to skin aging through reactive oxygen species due to ultraviolet exposure. 

Growing beauty from within market 
Bioiberica launched Dermial during Vitafoods 2022 as a dietary supplement for skin and beauty. It was designed to address the rising demand for beauty-from-within supplements.

Bioiberica notes that Dermial’s components synergize to nourish the skin at 60 mg/day. The company adds that another study indicated that Dermial performed better than pure hyaluronic acid from fermentation origin, a well-known ingredient in skin care.

“Growing consumer health-consciousness continues to give way to innovative ingredients and new product formats while trends and consumer needs continue to evolve at high speed,” Jaume Reguant, healthcare director at Bioiberica, previously told NutritionInsight.

According to Innova Market Insights, supplements launched for skin health tripled from 2017 to 2021, with an annual average growth of 30%. Europe has the most skin health supplement launches, followed by North America.
