From gummies to oat milk: Givaudan research reinvents turmeric supplementation

Givaudan unveils landmark findings on the absorption rates of its proprietary turmeric formulation, TurmiPure Gold. According to the company, a recent clinical study reveals the ingredient achieves similar or improved absorption of curcuminoids across a variety of dietary supplement applications compared to traditional capsules.

Givaudan says the development highlights the versatility and efficacy of TurmiPure Gold for addressing challenges, such as poor solubility and high dosage requirements that are commonly associated with turmeric supplements.

Published in Food & Function, the randomized crossover study included 40 healthy participants, aged 18 to 45, who consumed the ingredient in six different formats — capsules, ready-to-drink fruit nectars, sports nutrition bars, pectin gummies, probiotic drinks, and oat milk.

Researchers then evaluated the absorption of curcuminoid metabolites in the bloodstream after a single supplementation of 300 mg.

Beyond capsules

The study reveals that TurmiPure Gold curcuminoid absorption was equal to or surpassed expectations across all tested formats. Givaudan dispels the notion that traditional capsules are the “gold standard” for turmeric supplementation. Rather, it underscores how innovative formulations can bolster delivery and efficacy.

Moreover, the research highlighted a significant advantage in applications featuring suspended or polar lipids, such as oat milk and probiotic drinks, which demonstrate improved bioavailability. 

Givaudan highlights that the results emphasize the role of lipid-containing matrices in optimizing nutrient absorption and pave the way for more effective and consumer-friendly turmeric supplements that cater to diverse preferences and lifestyles.

Additionally, the company notes that the findings open the door for nutraceutical companies to explore novel and functional product formats that enhance user experience without compromising efficacy.

Givaudan further adds that TurmiPure Gold is a clean-label, natural turmeric formulation that can be used in many formats, including shots, gummies, and sports nutrition applications. Furthermore, the low daily dosage requirement of 300 mg offers patent-backed formulation flexibility.
