PharmaNutra’s patented delivery system recognized by WHO in treating iron deficiency
PharmaNutra’s Sucrosomial Iron technology has been included in the recent WHO Guidelines titled “Guidance on implementing patient blood management to improve global blood health status.”
The WHO guidance seeks to raise the efficiency of patient management to reduce the use of blood transfusions. It was presented as a practical guide to addressing global iron deficiency and anemia, blood loss, and coagulopathies with bleeding.
In particular, the guidelines mention Sucrosomal Iron as the only oral iron recognized in the context of supplementing for sideropenia in cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Sucrosomial Iron is a patented delivery system designed to protect micronutrient molecules such as iron, increasing their absorption and improving their gastrointestinal tolerability. It forms the basis of PharmaNutra’s SiderAL range of iron supplements.
“The reference to Sucrosomial Iron within the WHO Guidelines is an important recognition of the value of our patent, now of worldwide relevance, but also for the work carried out by our research and development department in recent years,” says Germano Tarantino, chief scientific officer of PharmaNutra.
“This evidence gives us further impetus to continue to invest in research to further refine and improve Sucrosomial Technology, and to ensure increasingly effective solutions both as a means of preventing and counteracting iron deficiency, and as supplementation in all areas where this condition is one of the most frequent complications.”
Addressing widespread deficiency
PharmaNutra highlights that iron deficiency remains the most widespread nutritional deficiency in the world today.
The WHO document points out that anemia is a common occurrence in people with both cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In fact, it is estimated that at least 170 million people worldwide with such comorbidities have anemia.
Last November, PharmaNutra closed an international distribution agreement with pharmaceutical producer and distributor Sigma Lifesciences for the sale of four SiderAL iron supplement products in Canada.
