Clinical study backs Lubrizol’s microencapsulated meltable’s “superior” magnesium absorption claims
New clinical research backs the “exceptional” bioavailability of Magshape magnesium microcapsules, a micronized and highly bioavailable form of the mineral crafted by Lubrizol Nutraceuticals. Study findings suggest that the meltable supplement “outperforms” other magnesium sources in terms of bioavailability and digestive tolerance.
The study — conducted at the Bionos Biotech research lab — demonstrated that Magshape “significantly outperformed” other commonly used forms of magnesium in enhancing magnesium absorption and did so without the adverse side effects commonly associated with magnesium supplementation.
“This innovative approach to magnesium supplementation not only helps to increase magnesium levels but to maintain them over time,” says Teresa Negra, Lubrizol’s new business development manager of Nutraceuticals and Food.
“Together with its high gastric tolerability, this makes Magshape an ideal, science-backed solution for those seeking to gain the long-term health benefits associated with having consistently adequate magnesium levels.”
Addressing prevalent magnesium deficiencies
Magshape is produced from magnesium oxide, known to contain the highest concentration of elemental magnesium. To enhance its absorption and biological availability, the magnesium has been micronized and then microencapsulated.
Lubrizol says this facilitates the gradual assimilation of magnesium throughout the entire digestive system, which ensures more gets into the bloodstream and helps replenish and maintain healthy magnesium levels in the body’s cells and tissues.
Magshape can be formulated into small tablets as well as 1.5 mg quick-dissolving powder sachets for melt-in-the-mouth consumption. “This format is increasingly popular among consumers seeking alternatives to the more traditional tablets and capsules and helps dissolve and release magnesium within the stomach’s acidic environment,” notes Lubrizol.
Despite its importance, magnesium deficiency is common and often undetected, underscores the supplier. This is largely due to poor diets compounded by the soil’s degradation of this essential mineral.
Magnesium is a vital mineral involved in more than 600 enzymatic reactions in the body, including energy production, muscle function, bone health, nervous system regulation, heart regulation, and DNA and protein synthesis.
Magnesium supplementation can be necessary to maintain optimum levels and is driving a rise in popularity for its broad health benefits. However, Lubrizol maintains that not all magnesium supplements are equal as rates of absorption can be as low as 10% depending on the type of magnesium used and formulation factors.
“Once absorbed, approximately 60% of magnesium is stored in bones, 20% in muscles, and the remaining 20% distributed in other soft tissues,” highlights the supplier.
“Blood magnesium levels are a direct reflection of intestinal absorption efficiency and formed the basis of our investigation into the absorption dynamics of our proprietary microencapsulation technology,” informs Alan Connolly, PhD, R&D manager of Lubrizol Nutraceuticals.
Magshape can be formulated into small tablets as well as 1.5 mg quick-dissolving powder sachets for melt-in-the-mouth consumption.“Magshape was designed to benefit individuals seeking to maintain adequate magnesium levels for overall health and well-being while also supporting improved post-exercise muscle recovery or to improve sleep patterns.”
Double-blind study
The double-blind, randomized, cross-over clinical study, published in Nutrients, involved 40 healthy men and women administered different magnesium supplements.
The study assessed the blood levels of magnesium in volunteers after oral intake of Magshape microcapsules compared to other magnesium sources, including magnesium oxide, magnesium citrate, and magnesium bisglycinate.
Each sample was supplied in an opaque glass bottle with individual doses containing 375 mg of elemental magnesium delivered as an orosoluble powder. Blood samples were taken at zero, one, four, and six hours after the intake of each magnesium product.
The study found that Magshape microcapsules significantly increased blood magnesium levels at all tested time points. Additionally, the Magshape microencapsulation technology enabled a sustained increase in blood plasma magnesium magnesium levels, maintaining higher levels for up to six hours post-intake.
Participants also reported fewer adverse effects, including reduced bowel activity and gastric “heaviness,” with Magshape microcapsules compared to other magnesium sources assessed in the clinical study. Moreover, almost 70% of Magshape users reported satisfaction with their overall health compared to those on the other magnesium formats, highlights Lubrizol.
“These findings underscore the potential of Magshape microcapsules to transform magnesium supplementation into a routine that is much easier to swallow and more beneficial,” says Isabel Gomez, marketing manager of Lubrizol Nutraceuticals.
“The enhanced absorption and reduced side effects observed in our study can be attributed to the innovative technologies employed to produce the Magshape microcapsules.”
