Bioavailability and healthy aging drive innovations in vitality vitamins
Key takeaways
- Vitality vitamins are shifting from generic claims to science-backed support for cellular, cognitive, cardiovascular, and epigenetic health.
- Innovation centers on multifunctional formulations and synergistic ingredients, such as active folate, SAMe, and vitamin K2.
- Bioavailability, delivery technology, and consumer adherence are becoming as critical to vitality outcomes as the nutrients themselves.

“Vitality” in vitamins is being redefined from a focus on energy to longevity, cognition, and cellular health. Nutrition industry experts highlight opportunities in synergistic ingredient combinations, enhanced bioavailability, and delivery innovations as consumers increasingly seek multilayered support for healthy aging.
Innova Market Insights data indicate that 86% of global consumers pay attention to vitamins, with 62% saying they include more of them in their diet.
Nutrition Insight explores how research and delivery tech advances boost vitality vitamins with Balchem, TopGum Industries, and Gnosis by Lesaffre.
“Vitality isn’t just a buzzword; it’s rooted in biology,” says Lauren Eisen, senior marketing and business development manager in Minerals and Nutrients at Balchem.

“We’re seeing a shift in consumers’ view of vitality from a vague feeling of ‘having more energy’ to seeking a multi-system state of long-term resilience, with more attention on optimizing underlying biological processes such as methylation and an increasing focus toward specific benefits.”
Eisen notes that terms like “cellular health” and “epigenetic health” are entering mainstream wellness conversations around healthy aging. Until recently, these terms existed almost exclusively in scientific journals.
“This shift aligns with emerging science linking methylation, homocysteine metabolism, and epigenetic processes to whole-body vitality.”
Meanwhile, Jenniffer Toomey, VP of Product, North America, at TopGum Industries, predicts that the category will continue to change.
Eisen highlights a shift in consumers’ view of vitality from having more energy to seeking long-term resilience and optimizing biological processes.“Over the next two to three years, vitality vitamins will evolve toward greater personalization, more effective formats, and expanded commercial opportunity, driven by consumer demand for functional, emotionally relevant, and experience-first solutions in a world facing rising stress and daily pressures.”
Multi-functional formulations
Silvia Pisoni, global operational marketing director at Gnosis by Lesaffre, sees the strongest demand in bone and cardiovascular health areas, as well as cognitive and cellular health. She says the main innovation “white space” lies in strategic ingredient combinations that can synergistically support different health areas.
“SAMe (S-Adenosyl-L-methionine) is a versatile compound that plays a crucial role in the one-carbon metabolism pathway, essential for energy production, neurotransmitter synthesis, and cellular function. By supporting this pathway, SAMe can enhance cognitive function, mood, and mental energy, making it valuable for vitality-focused formulations.”
She adds that folate (vitamin B9) is integral to this one-carbon metabolism pathway, which works in concert with SAMe to optimize energy metabolism and cellular processes. “Adequate folate levels are essential for physical energy production and cognitive performance, neurological function, and well-being.”
Pisoni notes that vitamin K2, specifically the MK-7 form, has emerged as a promising ingredient for vitality-focused formulations due to its cardiovascular and bone support. Moreover, she points to research suggesting that the vitamin K2 cardiovascular mechanism may also support brain health and cognitive function.
“Formulations combining these ingredients can provide a comprehensive solution that supports physical and mental energy while also addressing broader aspects of well-being and longevity, such as cognitive, cardiovascular, and bone health,” she details.
We met with Gnosis by Lesaffre’s research partner, Dr. Andrea Fuso, to explore the role of B vitamins and SAMe in brain health and DNA methylation.“Specifically, ongoing new research on the combination of SAMe and vitamin K is showing promising results, suggesting a complementary effect on the correction of multiple molecular pathways that are deregulated in aging and responsible for cognitive decline.”
Holistic healthy aging
Toomey from TopGum Industries notes that “vitality” in vitamins has evolved from basic nutrient intake to “holistic, everyday performance,” covering physical energy, mental clarity, stress resilience, immune support, sleep quality, and long-term health.
“The strongest demand growth is seen in energy and fatigue management, immune health, stress and mood support, cognitive function, and women’s health, reflecting consumers’ desire for solutions that support how they actually feel and function throughout the day.”
Balchem’s Eisen points to healthy aging and preventative wellness as areas of strong growth.
“But, while consumers are intrigued by these health topics and the link of vitality to these underlying processes, many are still unsure about what these words actually mean,” she cautions. “For example, while we’ve seen rising interest in epigenetic wellness, the mechanism behind it, methylation, is still not widely understood.”
In this biological process, methyl groups are added to DNA, acting as molecular switches that can “turn genes on or off,” says Eisen. Methylation influences which genes are activated and, therefore, how cells function, making it key for cellular health and healthy aging.
“Brands that connect the dots between these processes and nutrients like folate (particularly the L-5-MTHFR form) can be at the forefront of this growth and translate it into tangible benefits like long-term cognitive and heart health.”
Pisoni says that combining clinically validated nutrient forms with innovative delivery technologies is key for effective vitality outcomes.Eisen details that folic acid, the synthetic form of vitamin B9 commonly used, must undergo enzymatic conversion in the body to become the biologically active L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF).
Bioavailability matters
New product launches increasingly feature ingredients with high bioavailability, aligning with a growing market emphasis on scientifically supported formulations that improve overall product performance. Innova Market Insights data indicate a 9% growth in bioavailability claims in global supplement launches from September 2020 to October 2025.
Eisen agrees that for vitality solutions featuring folate, “form really does matter,” noting that forms like L-5-MTHF are an effective way to support vitality outcomes. Research recently revealed that Balchem’s choline-enriched L-5-MTHF, Optifolin+, is 2.6 times more bioavailable than folic acid, absorbing in less than a third of the time. In addition, the ingredient offers seven times the methyl groups found in standard folate forms for methylation support.
“For a consumer, that’s the difference between a difference that actually moves the needle on folate levels and one that just passes through.”
Moreover, the trial confirmed the formula’s bioavailability in a broad demographic of participants. “While many studies have previously focused on women due to the prominence of folate in prenatal nutrition, this new study expanded the scope to include healthy men and women across a wide age range (29–40 years) and found significant benefits,” she adds.
Eisen highlights that Optifolin+ simplifies formulation challenges by offering higher stability and solubility. “Manufacturers can explore innovative dosage forms, from traditional tablets and capsules to trending gummies and powders, allowing brands to meet pill-free formats while maintaining consistent potency through shelf life.”
Combining delivery tech with nutrients
Pisoni says that combining clinically validated nutrient forms with innovative delivery technologies is a “winning strategy” for effective vitality outcomes, highlighting several solutions from Gnosis by Lesaffre.
Toomey says that the most effective delivery formats ensure high bioavailability, ingredient stability, and real-world performance.“MenaQ7 Matrix is a patented delivery technology for our clinically validated vitamin K2 as menaquinone-7 (MK-7), offering superior bioavailability and stability. This enhanced absorption and protection make MenaQ7 Matrix an ideal choice for supporting cardiovascular health, cognitive function, and overall well-being.”
Moreover, she points to Quatrefolic, the company’s active folate. “Quatrefolic Pro, a versatile powder form, provides formulators with the flexibility to incorporate this active folate into a wide range of product applications.”
The company’s Adonat Premium SAMe is the first commercial form of the compound. Pisoni says that this multifaceted active ingredient is naturally sensitive and unstable, particularly due to moisture and heat, and requires expertise to master manufacturing and downstream processes to ensure the quality supporting finished supplements.
“Gnosis conducted an extensive comparative quality-based assessment of different SAMe ingredients on the market and confirmed the premium quality profile of Adonat, including the highest active isomer content.”
Vitality gummies
Looking at product format and delivery technologies for vitamins, TopGum Industries’ Toomey says that the most effective ones ensure high bioavailability, ingredient stability, and real-world performance. These include protected delivery systems for sensitive nutrients and technologies that prevent degradation, off-taste, or interaction between active ingredients.
“Increasingly, effectiveness is measured not only by absorption, but by how reliably consumers take the product over time.”
Toomey also highlights that gummies are emerging as the “ultimate delivery format for vitality.” Their positive user experience and ease of use will boost adherence, which supports performance and repeat usage.
“Consumer preference for convenient, tasty, and functional gummies is contributing to strong market growth, with the gummy supplements segment forecast to continue expanding rapidly through the decade.”
She notes that TopGum Industries’ advanced gummy delivery, TopCap microencapsulation technology, protects sensitive ingredients, improves stability, and enables better control over taste and performance within complex formulations.
“Combined with our ability to deliver high active loads in a consumer-friendly gummy format, we help brands translate scientific efficacy into real-world vitality outcomes, driven by consistency, compliance, and a positive daily user experience.”
